70th Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC70)
70th Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC70)
28 septembre 2026 - 3 octobre 2026
Hobart Tasmanie, Australie
"The 70th meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC70) will convene in Hobart, Australia.
The International Whaling Commission was set up under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, which was signed in Washington D.C., US, on 2 December 1946. The preamble to the Convention states that its purpose is to provide for the proper conservation of whale stocks and thus make possible the orderly development of the whaling industry.
An integral part of the Convention is its legally binding Schedule. The Schedule sets out specific measures that the IWC has collectively decided are necessary in order to regulate whaling and conserve whale stocks. These measures include catch limits (which may be zero as is the case for commercial whaling) by species and area, designating specified areas as whale sanctuaries, protection of calves and females accompanied by calves, and restrictions on hunting methods.
The biennial Commission meeting of the IWC is attended by around 400 people including government delegates, observers from non-member governments, other intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and representatives of the media."

Thinking with the Sea: Interactions and New Perspectives Inspired by the Blue Humanities
Thinking with the Sea: Interactions and New Perspectives Inspired by the Blue Humanities
30 septembre 2026 - 1 octobre 2026
Turku, Finlande
"Through the concept of blue humanities, scholars in the humanities have been studying the human aspects of the sea— exploring the significance of water for, among other things, human livelihoods, leisure, literature, and art. The aim of this conference is to open up new perspectives on human activity in and around water. With the help of interdisciplinary collaborations the organisers wish to bring together researchers, who can deepen and broaden the understanding of the interactions between humans and seas, lakes, and waterways—both historically and in the present. In a time when the awareness of humanity’s destructive impact on water is growing, the established research perspective founded in the natural sciences must be extended by a critical humanistic view of the human-water relationship.
The call for abstracts is now open until 15 April 2026! Find out more here."
